Avalon Emerson

Techno, breakbeats and strange edits of old pop songs. The American DJ Avalon Emerson doesn’t lock herself within boundaries of genres; her aim is to infect the parquet with energy and euphoria.

She was born in San Francisco, grew up in Arizona but for the past seven years lives in Berlin, where she regularly plays in the cult Panorama Bar in Berghain. She became known for an eclectic style and her own versions of renowned tracks, which she messes around with in her home studio. “Sometimes I hear something like a weird pop song from the ’80s, and I can edit it so that it can feel more right on the dance floor,” she says in an interview for Resident Advisor. She already managed to rise amongst the most sought after contemporary DJs; she played everything from Coachella, through Sonar all the way to Pitchfork Festival. In 2000, she recorded a mix for the famous DJ-Kicks series of the !K7 label. She also puts out her own singles; most often under the Spectral Sound label, which belongs to Ghostly International. Her 2014’s The Frontier was put into the Resident Advisor’s last decade’s best tracks list. She is also a valued remixer; her services were used by the likes of Slowdive, Christine and the Queens, Robyn, Four Tet or Astra.
